Czech Business Habits to Know Before You Start

When your company starts working in Czechia, some business habits will differ from what your team expects. None of them is a warning sign, and knowing them in advance saves time.

Language decides who you can reach

English is common in Prague and in international companies. In regional manufacturing and public administration you hear it far less.

The people who sign supply contracts often prefer Czech too. Working only in English shrinks the market you can reach.

Decisions come slowly, then hold

Early meetings bring plenty of questions and little visible enthusiasm. A yes can take longer than you are used to, and that is not a lack of interest.

Once a Czech company decides, it rarely changes course lightly. Changing supplier counts as a real cost.

Documents have to be exactly right

Public offices and banks follow procedure to the letter, and larger companies often do the same.

A document that is almost right comes back. Checking a file before it goes in takes less time than fixing it afterwards.

A local contact gets faster replies

With a Czech phone number and a Czech-speaking contact, answers usually come sooner. A local address has the same effect, with public offices as much as with suppliers and landlords.

You do not need a subsidiary or a local team for this. One person in Czechia who can act for you under a power of attorney covers much of it.

Employment runs on fixed rules

Employment contracts, notice periods and payroll obligations are clearly defined, and the rules are enforced. A contractor set-up that works in another country is not automatically safe here.

Before you build a team, take the contracts to a lawyer. Payroll questions belong with a tax adviser or accountant.
